The Final Fall Blog
Hey everyone! I just wanted to crank out one more blog post real quick before we wrap up MathCats operations for the fall semester.
Meeting Recap
At this week's meeting we had a game night so there's not a whole lot to cover there. I'm not sure who the current Jenga champion is, I didn't pay enough attention to find out. Needless to say, the battle will continue next semester.
Two Wednesdays ago we had a wonderful presentation from Dr. Haessig on the topic of "V-E+F=2," or Euler's Formula (one of the many). It was a really cool talk! I have a copy of the notes that I can send to anyone who wasn't able to attend; just let me know if you would like to see them. Dr. Haessig will be returning to an as-of-yet unspecified MathCats meeting next semester for a second part of the presentation.
He was also kind enough to share some interesting online resources on the topic which I will now link here.
AMS article on Euler's formula: this article covers the fundamentals of the theorem and its proof and also provides a lot of neat historical details.
Twenty Proofs of Euler's Formula: exactly as advertised, this website contains twenty different methods of proving the formula. This website also has a ton of other content on the subject of geometry.
Closing Comments
There won't be a meeting next week as it's in the middle of finals and also I am not going to be in Tucson. We are tentatively planning on holding our meetings for the spring semester in the same location and at the same time as fall, but I will still send out a poll to make sure that works for everyone before it's set in stone. At any rate thanks for a great fall semester, good luck with finals, and I'll see you in January!
